Nitsan Tal
I am drawn to the human form—not only to its beauty, but to its ability to express emotion through gesture, posture, and movement. In my figure sculpture, I explore the subtle language of the body: the tilt of a head, the curve of a back, the tension or ease held in a hand or shoulder. I am interested in capturing moments that feel both visually compelling and emotionally suggestive. My jewelry work grows from a similar fascination with form. Rather than simply adorning the body, I enjoy creating unusual shapes and unexpected compositions that become small sculptural objects in their own right. I am drawn to the balance between organic and geometric forms, and to the challenge of making something that is aesthetically intriguing from every angle. Whether working on a figure or a piece of jewelry, I am ultimately exploring shape, movement, proportion, and the relationship between an object and the human body.
Nitsan Tal was born and raised in a kibbutz in Israel. Her grandfather, an avid amateur photographer, gave her her first SLR camera and darkroom equipment, sparking her first interest in photography. Nitsan studied veterinary medicine in Israel and moved to the U.S. in 1998. Her proximity to New York City allowed her to take photography classes while practicing as a veterinarian. She studied photography at the New York Institute of Photography and the International Center of Photography and later studied filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts and New York University. Nitsan’s personal work is documentary in style with emphasis on the human condition. She has a particular interest in the work of nonprofit aid organizations and donates her time and services to NGO’s around the world. In 2013, Nitsan directed her first documentary film, “It Takes Balls,” the story of an actor who likes to portray women. The film was screened in several festivals in the U.S. She has since completed three more documentary films: Writers Matter (2015), 8000 Paperclips (2020), and My Missing Screw (2024). In her free time, she also enjoys sculpting in clay and jewelry making.
