Susan Kasson Sloan
My professional career has been the creation of one of a kind art jewelry, demonstrative of my love of art and my art background. I began painting in earnest a few years ago after switching gears and giving up the jeweler part of my life. However, I continue to teach jewelry fabrication classes. To me, abstract painting is akin to creating a visual landscape through process, and portraiture tests my ability to translate detail. There is freedom to apply basic elements of good design learned in art school as well as the tools learned at the jewelers bench. Employing alternative materials and exploring ways in which to make them work successfully in a painting fuels my creativity.
Susan Kasson Sloan has been a jewelry designer/fabricator known for her mastery of work with epoxy resin and metal, a painter both abstract and portraiture, and art instructor active in the New York City area. Born in New York City, she attended the High School of Music & Art, Queens College and classes at Parsons School of Design, the Art Students League of NY and the 92nd Street Y, NY. Sloan has been primarily known for her jewelry, with her work represented in prestigious private and public collections including the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution NY, the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C., the Victoria &Albert Museum, London, the Newark Museum, Newark RAM, Racine, Wisconsin, among others. She is the recipient of three New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowships.
